Heroes of Our Own: An Anthology of Student Writing from 826LA and 826 Valencia

In this anthology, first- through seventh- grade students from Los Angeles and San Francisco explore what it means to be a hero in the context of the places they call home. Dive in and you’ll learn about their families and their communities; the issues that affect their lives, from homework to homelessness; and the many ways these students feel supported, nourished, and empowered by the people around them. These young authors remind us that we, too, can become heroes simply by caring for our communities and each other.

In 2019, 826 National joined forces with our chapters in Los Angeles and San Francisco to launch the two-year 826 Student Author Program, thanks to a grant from the California State Library Foundation. The book includes a foreword featuring a conversation between 826 students, San Francisco Mayor London Breed, and Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly Mitchell; and curriculum from the project designed by staff at 826LA.
